Students start the blood typing workshop (“Blood Typing Workshop”) by listening to a 30 minute lecture on blood typing, why it is important and how it works. Once the lecture is complete students start the hands-on portion of the workshop which allows them to determine their own blood type. Students will clean their finger with alcohol and use a small (one use) lancet to prick their finger. Once the student pricks his/her finger he/she will use small plastic Eldon sticks to transfer a small drop of blood to their Eldoncard. Students will use the plastic stick to stir their blood with the reagent on their card, to see if clumping takes place. Once students complete putting a drop of blood on each of the four slots, they are instructed to use a provided cotton ball to stop the bleeding, and a band aid to place on their finger. All lancets are disposed of in a sharps container, and all items containing blood are collected for proper disposal. Once the students’ cards have dried, they (if they choose) may place a piece of plastic (provided) over their cards to take home with them. All cards that are not covered are disposed of properly. Results from the test are for educational purposes only and students should consult an actual lab for official blood type results.
